A New Year

As we say goodbye to the last, a new year stretches before us
In all its myriad splendour and possibilities
What will be different about this new year?

A repeat of the same old shit
Or a revamp to update today's?

    Some standards need to remain
Some things don't need to change
    Some things shouldn't

There is always choice - it just gets harder to find
The ones that are worth holding on to
For things will change - that we can be sure

An old woman looks at me as we talk
Looks in her purse - offers me $10.00

"I think you need this more than I do," she says

Later a young woman shivers in the cold
As her stabbed husband lies in a hospital bed

I give her the $10.00 for a taxi home

One constant we have is things will change
The court is still out on what things
    But there will be change

That we can be assured of.
