Alpha
and Omega
My first known
dawn; ah, there was wonder then.
I saw the sun,
a great benign friend,
Like to the lamplighter
who lit the stars,
Turned on the
moon and listened to my prayers.
And wonder walked
beside me through the day
And took my hand
down every slum bazaar
Where trams were
fairy cars and sweeps were kings
Who dusted out
the debris from the sky
Heaped down my
chimney when the morning broke,
A sudden herald
to the leaping day.
That was my alpha
then before I learned
the tear and tirade
of life's alphabet.
Nor have I lost
that early wonder yet
For in my muse's
cause I seek to guard
That child-like
darting welcome for the new;
In fresh perspective
of a universe
Outside the parish
routine of my trade:
Knowing beyond,
where alphabets must end
Within some vast
omega of the soul,
Each letter's
overtones shall be revealed
And childhood
wonder sated.
