The Watch On Venus
(Part Six)

Let's get some perspective happening here...
Our presence here is huge. Six billion people,
From three planetary systems. Sixteen thousand
Languages between us, not counting dialects.

Three Motherships, each the size of a small moon,
Three thousand Daughterships, each of which carries
One hundred and twenty scouts. Each Mothership has
Berths for a thousand daughters, and accommodation
for three thousand staff.

When the cloaks go off, the lights come on.
Lots of lights.

----------------------------------------------------

Out of the blackness grows a deeper dark,
Nature takes a bow for past achievements,
And gracefully allows technology to replace her.
At least here, now.

Our instruments have served us well,
But now they falter, tell us lies,
Like a confused and guilty child.
Father is coming.

Our cloaks fail, our communications fail,
We are naked in the darkness, helpless, hopeless,
Beleaguered from above, below, and within.
Around Venus, an aurora grows.

--------------------------------------------------

Later, the Venusians would write:

"And on that day, all the armies of Home
Lay down their arms. For the Heavens did
Glow with a light that was not of the Sun,
And the armies of Iesu did chant and dance,
And the armies of the Heathens did despair."

And that was pretty close to the truth.
