The Watch On Venus
(Part Four)

"Iesu Sing, Iesu Dance,
Iesu Gives us one more chance,
 Iesu up, Iesu down,
Iesu loves us round and round"
- Venusian Nursery Rhyme.

--------------------------------------------------------

They have a legend now, that the child Iesu,
Resisted a demon. Seems we can't win.
Godfrey Philips has been dust for millennia,
But the fates conspire against us. They refuse to forget.

The Martians are in trouble. It was their experiment
Which impregnated the female in the first place,
Their shield that failed on the night of the birth,
And their inherent ability to Sing, which has now been given to Venus.

The Greys arranged a meeting, miles from anywhere, with the child.
They wanted to take him away, bring him back here, bring him home.
But Iesu Sang. He Sang of Bright Stars in the Sky, of the basic
Right to love and be loved, and to be left in peace.

So Be It, the Greys declared; let the Martians' Son do as he will,
Let the Martians tend to their still-broken shields, Their sad Songs.
So Iesu travelled, and Sang. He Sang of Bright Stars and love, and
he moved us all greatly. Even the Greys mourned his passing.

BEGIN PUBLIC:

We're going in. What the Earther Godfrey set off Millennia ago,
Has come to a head; the locals refuse to believe that Iesu is
Dead. We took the body, of course, away from the prying eyes,
But that's just lent fuel to the fire.

Venus is erupting in violence, and it's our fault.

The Martians have finally fixed their Cloak. As ridiculous as it
Seems, this has caused a major upset on Venus. We're sending
Earthers in first, hoping their inability to interbreed
Extends to Venusians.

END PUBLIC:

BEGIN PRIVATE:

My father is worrying me. A Grey, always so self-assured, so confident,
Shouldn't fret so. He's been spending too much time with ancient roms,
With creased forehead and worried frown.

I shouldn't be doing this, I know, but I've used my position to try
And see what's bothering him so. His last request of the ancient rom
Was to search out the word, "Guardian".

Something deep inside me quakes.
