Man
of the land
They
strolled hand in hand, this man of the land
and
his wife of so few years
not a word was spoken, fingers entwined
eyes
moistened with tears.
Two months, maybe three, certainly
no more
it's
jolly well advanced, we can do no more
his mind
drifted back to those younger days
oh how she liked
to dance, to the music on the radio waves.
It took
a while for the doctor's words to sink in
Oh God,
why us? had we committed a mortal sin?
He thought
of the day they wed
and of the vows they made, to love,
honour and obey
and never to part for a single day.
The
doctor was talking, he seemed miles away
on a different
planet, on a different day
I shall make the necessary arrangements
of
course she'll have to stay.
The
man of the land said
"I'll not leave her alone in
this place
I'll take her home with me, 'cos she's
a fighter
and
we'll face this together my lady and me.
Medication
arranged, a firm shake of the hand
a slight smile
on her face
she's going home with me
the
man of the land
Take
me home my love
there's been things growing I've never
seen
then
there's jobs to be done, and the house to clean
I'll
not stay in bed like some spoilt rich queen.
Nothing
has changed, life goes on
we can manage with the help of our
son
he'll
be back soon, he'll not stay away
but don't call
him yet, he's just gone away.
There
was no pretending, they worked very hard
tending
the stock, cleaning the yard
he arranged for home help, she was
annoyed
but
she knew it was something she couldn't avoid.
You
take a rest my lovely girl
you are with your loved ones at home
we
have travelled so far, so many miles together
but
this journey you will go alone.
Oh you,
yes you up there
you who controls the stars
send
some down to fall on my love
for those twinkling eyes.
The
stars came down, put a smile on her face
then took
her away, to that better place
I know she's up there, watching, keeping
things in hand
a star burning bright, for her man
of the land.
