HELLO

    LOVE, POEM

Oh your hair was so black and fair
   Floating like a butterfly
   On gossamer wings around
   Your shoulders dear
A sculpted face smiles at me
With eyes misty with tears of joy
   Breasts heavy with milk
   And a child to care

SAD EYES

Pretty as ever you stood on the sand
     Frock clean and swinging
Looking up to a camera blind
To your sad eyes and a heart hurt by me
     With a callous, unthinking departure
With a sister more robust and smiling
     Completing the picture
Complete but never complete with those sad eyes

How can I say I am sorry to you
     I am not your father
     You called me Dad
You're Mom's child - your sister is my child
So why do your sad eyes make me feel such a bastard
Because your small hands held mine
And I hugged you when you cried
Laughed with you and cried with you
Held you as you fell asleep

You were there through the highs and lows
Of our life and I loved you like mine
     Protected, fed and clothed you
     So I am sorry Lisa
Sorry that I wasn't there to
Cheer you on in the school races
Sorry I wasn't there to pick you up when you fell
And to not be there to offer you a snag from the barby
But I am glad you have grown now
And maybe your sad eyes can smile again.
