Dragonflyer

She stood alone in the open field
With one dark dragon at her side
Tall golden grass whispering with wind
Endless secrets, the kind we will never know
And she raised her arms setting dragon loose
To sweep beyond her hands and fly
Endless tale trailing in the breeze
Across prairie fields and to the west
The wind picked up and the dragon turned
Fierce smile painted upon its face
She knew this smile from her fingertips
And silently bowed her head to show
Respect to this her mighty foe
Her hands now high above her head
Her fingers deftly working now
Pulling tight on the dragon's long taut string
Which bound that dragon to her still
Fighting nature and the dragon's will
Her legs apart to brace the earth
Her golden hair, loose shirt blown wild
Head thrown back, eyes tightly shut
Determined to win this wicked war
Regardless of all which fights against her
Regardless of the changing wind
Regardless of her aching arms
Regardless of her fingers torn
Regardless of her wish to stop
This battle with the floating dragon
I watched her running across that field
Releasing string then snapping fast
Each time pulling hard the dragon back
To hear it screaming high above
Its voice now crackling in the breeze
No longer now the dragon's smile
But her own lips tight in a knowing win
Then I heard her suddenly snap that string
The sound echoed sharp across the fields
And the dragon fell dead down to the ground
And she left him there in his paper glory
To be washed and ruined by the rain
Never to fight with her again
And as she passed me sitting silently here
She paused and smiled just one last time
And I saw only then she had been blind
