Divination

The soldier asleep is destined to creep
up the dark hidden stairs to the castle of kings
and his captain abed never raises his head
when his stark tale is told by the knell of the rings.

The soldier awakes and shivers and quakes
at the foot of the staircase upreaching, absurd,
for he senses the pain of the kings gone insane
from the prophecies told by the calls of a bird.

Yes, there's mischief afoot in the weight that is put
on the shoulders of armies in quest of a haven,
for no man has seen all the combat between
mad kings as foretold in the cries of the raven.
